Abstract

The present study was designed to check the possible interlink between psychological capital, social support, subjective well-being and perceived stress among widows. A sample consisting of 100 widows (Mage = 39.83, SDage = 7.92) was drawn through purposive and snow ball sampling techniques. Psychological Capital Questionnaire (PCQ; Luthans et al., 2007), Perceived Stress Scale (PSS; Cohen et al., 1983), Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support (MSPSS; Zimet et al., 1988), Subjective Happiness Scale (SHS; Lyubomirsky & Lepper, 1999), and Satisfaction with Life Scale (SLS; Diener et al., 1985) were administered to the participants. Results of Pearson’s Product Moment Correlation showed that higher level of psychological capital had significant association with greater social support and subjective well-being (life satisfaction, subjective happiness) and negatively correlated with perceived stress. Findings of Multiple Linear Regression Analysis indicated that self-efficacy and resilience (subscales of psychological capital) significantly predicted subjective well-being (life satisfaction, subjective happiness); while social support from the perspective of significant others also significantly contributed to subjective well-being (life satisfaction, subjective happiness). Mediation analysis using PROCESS MACRO (Hayes, 2018) indicated that psychological capital fully mediated the relationship between perceived stress and life satisfaction. The current research emphasized the importance of social support and psychological capital in order to reduce the perceived stress and improve the subjective well-being among widows.
