Personality Correlates of Runaway Women and Their Vulnerability towards Depression
Abstract
The present study was conducted to assess the personality traits of runaway women and their vulnerability towards depression. A sample of 120 women from Dastak NGO; Social Welfare Center and Darul-Aman, Lahore, Pakistan were taken. Neuroticism, Extraversion, Openness –Personality Inventory-Revised (NEOPI-R) and Depression subscale of Symptom Checklist-Revised (SCL-R) was used to assess personality traits and vulnerability of runaway women towards depression respectively. The results indicated that 99% of the participants scored significantly above the mean on Neuroticism; and considerable number of participants also scored high on Extraversion, Openness, Conscientiousness and Agreeableness. Majority of the participants exhibited neurotic traits and were experiencing negative effects such as anxiety, distress, sadness, anger, guilt, disgust, and embarrassment. Results of Depression subscale of SCL-R revealed that 91% of the women scored significantly above the cut-off point. Results depicted positive relationship between Neuroticism and depression while Extraversion was found to be negatively associated with depression. It is concluded that runaway women residing in different NGOs and residential facilities do have personality problems and vulnerability towards depression which needs serious attention of mental health professionals.
